Sleep loss can be actually a widespread issue with serious physical and economic consequences. Music such as sound for sleep relaxation could impact upon psychological, physical and psychological conditions, which may explain anecdotal reports of its own success being an everyday sleeping aid. But, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why people elect for music for a sleep aid, or what music works; thus the underlying drivers into music-sleep effects remain unclear. We investigated music as a sleep aid over the general public by means of a mixed methods data paid survey (n = 651) which scored musicality, sleep habits, and also open text responses on which music will help sleep and why. In total, 62 percent of respondents stated they used music to help them sleep. They reported two musical genres comprising 545 artists. Linear modelling detected stress, era, and music use because large predictors of sleep quality (PSQI) scores) Regression tree modelling revealed that younger individuals who have higher musical participation proved much more likely to make use of music to aid sleep. Thematic analysis of this available text responses generated four themes that clarified why folks believe music may help sleep: music offers unique properties which stimulate sleep (Supply ), music is part of a normal sleep routine (Habit), music induces a bodily or mental state conducive to sleep (Condition ), along with music blocks an internal or external stimulation that could otherwise disrupt sleep (Distract). This survey provides new evidence in to the relationship between sleep and music in a population which ranged widely in age, musicality, sleep habits and stress levels. Diversity was detected both in music choices, which reflected idiosyncratic preferences in place of some consistent musical structure, and at the reasons why music encourages good sleep, which moved much beyond simple physical/mental relaxation.
